Strings That Tie Us

“The Red String of Fate” is a Chinese myth about a boy who is shown, by the Old Man Under the Moon (or Yue Xia Lao), the girl he would eventually marry. The Old Man had a huge bag of red strings and said that he only had to tie one string connecting two people and they would be destined to marry. The boy didn’t want to get married and he threw a rock at the girl--hitting her on the forehead. Years later the boy’s parents arranged his marriage. When he lifted the veil he saw that his wife was beautiful but had a scar on her forehead. She said that a boy threw a rock at her when she was a child.

It is also said that the strings can be knotted, twisted, and strained, but can never break. I love the idea behind this story. The picture that no matter how many breakups or heartaches you endure, there is someone you are destined to be with and there are no coincidences.
